Authorizations
- Fishing License (Salzburg Annual Fishing License) – issued by the Salzburg State Fisheries Association upon fulfillment of requirements. Requirements include: minimum age 12 years, proof of fishing expertise (fishing examination), payment of the fishing levy. Valid for one calendar year.
- Guest Fishing License – for 24 hrs, 1 week, or 2 weeks; additionally, there is a Guest Fishing License for fishing ponds (24 hrs). Issued from 12 years of age; official photo ID must be carried.
- Permit (License) – private law permission from the fishing rights holder for the specific fishing area and period; must be carried on the water together with the fishing or guest fishing license.
Minors
Under 15 years of age, children may fish without their own fishing licenseif accompanied by an adult, authorized person.
Closed Seasons & Minimum Sizes
Closed seasons/minimum lengths (“Brittelmaße”) are set statewide by regulation; operators may impose stricter rules. Examples:
- Brown Trout: Closed season Oct 1 – Feb 28, minimum size 25 cm (from 800 m above sea level 22 cm)
- Grayling: Closed season Jan 1 – May 31, minimum size 33 cm
- Pike: Closed season Feb 1 – Apr 30, minimum size 50 cm
- Pikeperch: Closed season Mar 16 – May 31, minimum size 40 cm
- Huchen: Closed season Feb 1 – May 31, minimum size 85 cm
- Lake Trout: Closed season Oct 1 – Dec 31, minimum size 50 cm

Rights & Obligations on the Water
- Carry documents: Annual or guest fishing license and permit; present upon request.
- Ethical Fishing: Prohibited are, among others, explosives, firearms, harpoons, poisons/narcotics, fish spears/snares, live vertebrates as bait (exceptions only with official authorization), as well as certain fishing methods such as snagging/stabbing.
Prohibitions & Penalties
Administrative offenses include: fishing without a valid fishing/guest fishing license or without a permit, catching protected species during closed season, falling below minimum sizes, disregarding commands/prohibitions. Legal basis: Salzburg Fisheries Act 2002.
